California is known to be prone to earthquakes due to the high number of fault lines. With some destructive, and even fatal, earthquakes in the past, Californians are prepared at all times for this type of catastrophe. However, what about those traveling to California. A new warning from geologists has tourists rethinking their travel plans.
Travel worries began when an earthquake predictor’s findings suggested a large earthquake could happen soon. Relying on astrology and Earth’s alignment with other planets, the predictor suggests it will happen sometime between February 21 and March 7.
“In this timeframe a rare geometry will cause a significant seismic increase, with probably one or two magnitude 7.8 earthquakes at least,” David Schwartz, a US Geological Survey (USGS) geologist explains. “But there is a definitely the potential for mega-thrust earthquake with magnitude 8 or even 9.”
Recently, other seismic predictors have also provided evidence that California is due for a powerful and large scale earthquake in the near future. After witnessing several small quakes, many experts have warned about being prepared if traveling to California. There are no formal travel risks, but there are a few things that you can do to make sure you are safe.
First, make sure that your travel insurance will protect you if anything should happen while on your trip. You should also remain aware of your surroundings and know where you should take cover if an earthquake were to happen.
It is important to note that California has not experienced an earthquake greater than a magnitude 7 since the catastrophic quake of 1906.

Traveling to the West Coast of the USA was a noteworthy decision by one of the first pencil making companies in the USA, the General Pencil Company. Founded by Edward Weissenborn in 1889 and located in Jersey City Heights, New Jersey, he originally called his company The American Pencil Company. Mr. Weissenborn learned and brought the art of pencil making from his native Germany and six generations later, the company is still owned and operated by the Weissenborn family.
In 1923, the operation became the General Pencil Company and in 1965 they broadened their horizons and set up a new location in Redwood City, California. This enabled them to cater to the Western USA markets, and to be closer to the supply of incense Cedar wood, the material used for encasing graphite, wax and other raw materials to form pencils. http://www.generalpencil.com/ Many of the hand making methods, brought from Germany by Edward Weissenborn in the 19th century, are still used in their California and New Jersey locations today. Art shops and office suppliers sell an extensive range of their quality products, which include charcoal sticks, water color pencils and pastel chalks.
Through the generations, the descendants of Edward Weissenborn have learned and participated in the art of pencil making and today they determine the running practices of the company. Each one of the company’s pencils is carefully encased in incense Cedar wood, one of the reasons the company traveled to the West Coast of the USA.
For many, the most treasured souvenirs from a trip are the photographs taken of family, friends, and the unique sights of the region as a reminder of the trip. Combine the special feeling of a photo from a memorable trip with the enduring trend of taking pictures of meals to be posted to social media websites like Instagram and it’s clear to see why so many travelers are flocking to restaurants with photogenic foods across the country.
The competition to become the most photogenic food in America is fierce, whether it is an elegant farm-to-table dish in earth tones or one of the trendy pastel “unicorn” food items bedecked with edible glitter. The amount and variety of beautiful dishes being created by chefs is simply astounding! What is less surprising is the fact that many of the foods ranked most photogenic are to be found along the West Coast of the United States. Alaska Airlines announced Tuesday that they will be adding 13 daily flights to their roster from Paine Field in Everett, Washington. Most of the flights will go to California; new flights will be offered to Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose. Additional flights will also go to Las Vegas, Phoenix and Portland.
In May 2017, Alaska Airlines first announced they would be flying out of Paine Field. However, company representatives stated that they would only be offering 9 daily flights. With their new announcement, they have since expanded that number to 13.
The airline expects to start the new nonstop flights in fall 2018, when Paine Field will begin providing commercial service. Paine Field will also be the site of a new $20-million passenger terminal constructed to service Alaska Airlines passengers. Alaska is not the only major airline to move into the airport. United Airlines announced in August that they will offer six flights from Paine Field, starting in 2018.
Founded in 1932, Alaska Airlines is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The legacy carrier has earned the top ranking for customer satisfaction from J.D. Power and Associates every year since 2007. In 2017, its mileage rewards plan was also ranked first by U.S. News & World Report among American airlines.
Currently, Alaska Airlines flies out of Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, the region’s largest airport. By adding flights from Paine Field, Alaska Airlines hopes to attract customers who do not wish to make the hour drive south to the larger airport.
When you think about taking a trip to California, you probably think about enjoying the sunshine and palm trees. While California frequently has very warm weather, there are certain areas of the state that you get a lot of snow and can provide a lot of fun outdoor activities. For those that are looking to go to California areas such as Lake Tahoe to do some skiing, there could be a lot of fresh snow in the coming weeks (http://www.latimes.com/travel/deals/la-tr-california-snow-report-20180108-story.html).
Some of the most popular areas for outdoor skiing and snowboarding in California include Big Bear Mountain as well as Mammoth Mountain. With the winter holiday weekends coming up quickly, as well as preparations for the US Winter Olympic trials, now is a great time for the snow to start falling. It is expected that the current storms coming through the area should leave well over two feet at the summit of some mountains. There should also be more than a foot of fresh powder near the top ski resorts in the area.
While the snowfall in the California Mountains is a welcome blessing for people who enjoy to ski and snowboard, it is also very important for the entire state. This past summer was a historically dry summer for the entire state and current water supply is now a big concern. The city of Los Angeles and the state will benefit greatly from the snowfall this winter as it will eventually melt and flow into existing water reservoirs across the state.

The West Coast has always been a melting pot of different cultures, and the food of the region reflects this rich history.
Of course, don’t allow your excitement over these new West Coast restaurants allow you to miss out on old-standbys, either. Los Angeles is perhaps California’s premier destination for wine and spirits, and the Los Angeles bar scene is a crowded and exciting landscape. It can be hard to keep up with all of the openings and changes with L.A. bars and breweries. Luckily, Eater Los Angeles has come out with a list of bars to try this weekend.
The first bar on the list is The Normandie Club, described as a moody, laid-back lounge with retro R&B cuts playing quietly over expansive, dark booths. This would be an excellent spot for a large group looking to kick their feet up and enjoy the hip vibes.
The second bar on this list is The Woods, a casual hang-out spot in an unassuming strip mall in the outskirts of Hollywood, Los Angeles. While the majority of Hollywood bars fall prey to “upscale cocktails and fancy trappings (or worse, slushy touristy drinks)” the author laments, The Woods is a refreshing and eclectic surprise, full of eccentric characters and charming decor. The drinks are strong and the patrons are fascinating.
The third and final bar on the list is located in historic Koreatown, a well-known drinking and cultural hot-spot in Los Angeles. HMS Bounty is a Koreatown bar with a long history and a nautical theme, complete with matching decor. This bar features the “Wise-man Special” Cocktail, a can of Tecate and a shot of booze. Order one of these with a friend and try to grab a dusty, moldy booth in the back.
One big stereotype that people on the East Coast have when traveling to the West Coast is that it only includes the state of California. There are other states that make up the West Coast such as Oregon and Washington. Los Angeles and San Francisco are also not the only major West Coast Cities despite what Northeasterners may think. Cities such as Seattle, Portland, San Diego and Tacoma are all major West Coast cities with their own unique attractions.
TV shows like the Real Housewives of Orange County perpetuate the stereotype that tan blondes abound in California and the West Coast. This is actually not true. Northern states such as the Dakotas and Minnesota have more blondes than the West Coast despite TV stereotypes and perceptions. The West Coast is highly diverse. If you travel here, then you will see a lot of different people and hairs colors to come with it.
Surfing is another stereotype that visitors to the West Coast have of the area. It would seem that the West Coast abounds with surfers. The truth is that not everyone is a die-hard surfing fan. Most of the waters surrounding the West Coast are cold. Many West Coast residents also enjoy other outdoor activities such as hiking or simply spending time at the beach.
The West Coast is viewed to be as sunny and full of beaches. Actually, it snows on the West Coast and there are some major mountains. Some of the mountains here even provide excellent ski locations as well as hiking.
The wildfires that are currently raging in the Los Angeles area have been going on for weeks. They have destroyed many homes and acres of wilderness. You might be thinking about going to Los Angeles on vacation. If this is the case, you might be concerned about your safety. There have been more than 200,000 people who have been forced to evacuate the area. Many of these people had no choice because there was a mandatory evacuation order given by local police. A state of emergency was officially declared by California governor Jerry Brown.
The reality is that it is still safe to travel to Los Angeles at the present time. There have been no messages on Twitter from the LAX airport about the wildfires. Likewise, the Long Beach Airport has not taken to social media to warn travelers about the wildfires. Therefore, it is safe to assume that you will be able to fly into the area without any problems.
It should be noted that train travel has been impacted by the wildfires. Pacific Surfline released a message on Twitter that said their service through the Los Angeles region has been stopped due to the wildfires. Therefore, people who booked tickets for rides on the train in that area will need to make alternate plans. It is unknown how long this delay in railroad travel will stay in effect. People are advised to monitor the Twitter feeds of the airline or railroad they have purchased tickets from to receive current info.
