scraping1Today I began our bathroom painting project by removing nails, hooks, light switch cover, electical outlet cover, towel hangers and wooden blinds. When Chip came home we removed the medicine cabinet, mirror and glass light covers. Then we began to remove the loose wallpaper. Except, there was no wallpaper. What was peeling up was actually the drywall paper! So, we started the monumental task of removing all of the loose drywall paper -- which turned two of our walls into enormous uneven messes.

I was afraid that we were going to be faced with ripping out all of the drywall and replacing it with new drywall, so I did some research online and found out about a product called Gardz that can seal damaged drywall.

scraping2So we added Gardz to our list of things to buy at our next (they're becoming almost daily) trip to Home Depot or Lowe's. To make it easier to get the loose paper off, we used a putty knife and a plastic scraper... which really increased the amount of debris on the floor.

I had a little hand-held electrical sander that I used for sanding furniture, but it worked fine for sanding the old paint and exposed drywall to create smooth surfaces. During sanding, we wore masks and goggles (which helped keep MOST of the dust from getting under my contacts, but not all of it). We tried to keep the bathroom door mostly closed, but the dust particles are very fine and ended up all over our bedroom and even down the hall and in the guest bathroom.

After sweeping up the debris and vacuuming as much dust as possible, I used our handheld dustpan brush to brush dust and tiny little bits of drywall paper off of the walls. Then I got a bucket of water (with a splash of bleach as requested by Chip) and we cleaned the walls and ceiling with damp sponges.

Our next task is to go to one of our local home improvement stores and try to find Gardz and Damp-Rid. We're going to let the walls thoroughly dry before we seal them, so we're hoping that Damp-Rid will accelerate the process!

Stay tuned for Part 3!
