Founded in 2007, Avaaz is a civic-based organization promoting global activism. The group realizes that not everyone wishes to protest injustice in the world, so they cater to those who wish to organize from home with online petitions. Their main goal is to “organize citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want.”
Their priorities are set annually through member polls. Campaign ideas are polled, then tested, finding the strongest issues. This is how the power is derived from members of the organization, giving them a voice.
The staff alerts members by email, and they choose whether to get involved or not. The campaign depends upon that decision. Intricate campaign strategies must be developed to find ways to convey messages within only a few minutes. A specific agenda is not set, on the contrary, the staff takes suggestions from members regarding actions that can affect the world.
Avaaz is competely member funded, and does not depend upon corporate influence. The organization accepts donations, rather than funding from corporate entities.
The online protest revolution has significantly grown in recent years. Avaaz strives to give a voice to protesters by letting them choose their own issues to protest and believe in. They do not launch campaigns that the staff believes in, but rather what the members believe in. This gives powers to the members of the organization. For this reason, the number of members joining Avaaz is growing by the minute.
