Orange Coast College Narrowly Misses National Rowing Championship

While the Orange Coast College men’s rowing team hoped to place better than nine at the 2017 American Collegiate Rowing Association National Championship Regatta, they still consider this a major accomplishment when this college’s team was up against Notre Dame, the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina.

Even those these colleges are much bigger than the 25,000 students attending this Coasta Mesa, California, community college, the team finished only about eight minutes behind the winner in the grueling race lasting almost six hours.

National Rowing Championships

While the team did not finish as well as expected this year, this small Californian college has already won 11 national championships. Many of the nine members on the team have never rowed a boat until they joined the team at Orange Coast Community College. Yet, they will go on to join major university teams that beat them this year.

Secret to Success

Glassdoor revealed that part of the secret to the success of the Orange Coast Community College rowing team is Assistant Coach Steve Morris who arrives at the training center before 5::30 AM each day.

Steve was on the rowing team while a student at Orange Coast College, He then became the head coach in the 1990s, but he stepped away when his family was young. Now, he has returned as the assistant coach.

Importance of Teamwork

Morris says that a great team must learn to work together as a team. While there are nine individual rowers, each much work in unity with the others to make a great team.
